Govt plans to set up exclusive Ayush University for Ayush stream of medical courses

With Ayush stream of Indian system of medical courses witnessing huge demand in Andhra Pradesh, the state government is contemplating to set up an exclusive Ayush University to cater to the needs of Indian stream of medical course in the state.

At present, the NTR Health University which is catering to the needs of allopathic medical and paramedical courses in Andhra Pradesh, is also administering the needs of Ayush stream of medical courses in the state. However, in the recent times, with the demand for MBBS courses increased manifold and lakhs of students competing in the NEET exams country wide, only a few are getting placed in allopathic medical courses, while the remaining lot who are very much aspiring to become doctors have now started looking at alternative stream of medical courses under Ayush. Ayush stream of medical courses include Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy.

“At present we are having the NTR University catering to the allopathic stream of medical courses in the state. However, in the recent times thousands of students who have not got admission into MBBS courses are looking at getting into alternative courses of Indian stream of medicine, which is also equally getting good response from the people. Therefore, we feel having just NTR University to cater both the allopathic and Indian system of medicine will not serve the purpose in the long run. In view of this we have sent a proposal seeking the central government’s permission to establish and exclusive Ayush university which would help in giving more focus on research in the Indian stream of medicine subjects and help develop them on par with the contemporary allopathic medical system in future,” informed Murali Mohan, Member of Parliament from Telugu Desam Party.

Next month, the state government is going to lay foundation stone for the construction of an International level Homoeopathy medical college in Rajamahendravaram city of Andhra Pradesh. The newly constructed college will be named after the noted film actor of Telugu fame, Dr. Allu Ramalingaiah. “We are expected to lay foundation stone for a new Homoeopathy medical college in September, which would be equipped highest standards of infrastructure to train the students in the homoeopathic stream of medicine medical,” said Murali Mohan.

If the central government gives its assent to set up an exclusive Ayush university then Andhra Pradesh will have two major universities, one propagating the allopathic stream of medicine courses while the other focusing on developing and strengthening of the traditional Indian system of medical system on par with the allopathic medical courses.
